RESUME OF PHILLIP J. KIRK, JR.

Phil Kirk is currently serving as Director, Brady Energy Services, a comprehensive energy solutions company headquartered in Greensboro with offices in Raleigh, Wilmington, Charlotte, and Fayetteville.  He is involved in business development, marketing, public relations, energy efficiency, and performance contracting for the company which was started 48 years ago as a heating and air conditioning firm.

Kirk joined the firm in July and works out of the Raleigh office. He is also a member of the Brady executive management team.

Prior to becoming associated with Brady, Kirk was Vice President for External Relations at his alma mater, Catawba College in Salisbury, in addition to serving as a consultant with the Yadkin Valley Winegrowers Association, National Search & Education Consulting, and Shelco, Inc.

Kirk currently chairs the Public School Forum of North Carolina board and executive committee and also serves on the boards of Meredith College, UNC TV, North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching Foundation, Visiting International Faculty program, and Learning Station. He also serves on the education committee of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce. He is the Chairman Emeritus of the State Board of Education where he served for more than six years and visited 750 schools in all 115 school districts.  He has also served as Vice Chairman of the State Board of Community Colleges and as a member of the Board of Visitors at East Carolina University and the Board of Trustees at Catawba College and the UNC Tomorrow Commission.

He chaired the working committees for the two largest successful bond issues in North Carolina history--$2.75 billion in bonds for schools and roads and $3.1 billion for UNC System, community colleges, and UNC TV.

A native of Salisbury, Kirk has held a variety of jobs in education, government, and business.  He served as Chief of Staff for Governors Jim Holshouser and Jim Martin and U. S. Senator Jim Broyhill.  For 16 years he was the President/CEO of North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry (NCCBI), the state chamber of commerce and state manufacturing association and Publisher of the NORTH CAROLINA magazine.  He has twice served as Secretary of the Department of Human Resources, the largest department in state government.  In 1970 he became the youngest State Senator in North Carolina history at that time.  Among his other former jobs are English and journalism teacher, radio announcer, newspaper reporter, vice president of a nursing home management firm, and assistant to the Dean of the College of Management at North Carolina State University.  As a lobbyist in the North Carolina General Assembly, he was consistently ranked in the top 20 of the most effective lobbyists in the state.

A graduate of Catawba College, Kirk has received a number of awards there, including Honorary Doctor of Laws degree, the O. B. Michael Award as the outstanding alumnus, and the Medallion for Exemplary Lifetime Service.  He served on the Board of Trustees for 26 years and as the President of the Catawba College Alumni Association.  The Phillip J. Kirk Jr. scholarship has been endowed in his name in the Department of Teacher Education at Catawba.  He has received the I. E. Ready Award, which is the top award given by the North Carolina Community College System; the Holderness-Weaver Award, given by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for outstanding public service; the Jay Robinson Education Leadership Award; and the inaugural “North Carolina Citizen of the Year” award from the Boy Scouts.   He has been named an “Honorary Alumnus of East Carolina University” and is in the Educators Hall of Fame at East Carolina University and a recipient of the Razor Walker Award from UNC Wilmington for his work in public education.  North Carolina Communities in Schools presented him with the “Power of One” award and he has also received  two statewide “Friends of Education” awards from the Professional Educators of North Carolina and the North Carolina Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development.

Former Governor Jim Hunt has said of Kirk, “If there’s a single person in this state who is more involved and at the center of every issue, I don’t know who it is.”

Kirk is married to the former Margaret Simmons of Newport, NC and has four daughters and six grandchildren.  The Kirks reside in Raleigh and are active members of Ridge Road Baptist Church.
